What a bricklayer needs on your plot
Plot brickwork goes at the speed the site allows. None of the list below is unusual — it is simply what has to be true for a gang to work a full day rather than half of one.
- Level, compacted groundMaterials and a mixer need somewhere flat and dry.
- Scaffold at the right liftsRaised in step with the work, not once at the end.
- Materials to the liftBrick, block and sand landed where they are needed, not stacked at the gate.
- Water and powerA standpipe and a supply for the mixer.
- The drawings on siteCavity detail, tie spacing, lintel schedule, DPC levels.
- Muck awaySomewhere for the waste, and someone to take it.
Asked often
New build, answered
If yours is not here, ring and ask it.
Do you price by the metre?
On plot work, usually — that is what builders are used to. A one-off wall or a repair is priced as a job. Either way it is quoted before anything starts.
Can you take more than one plot?
Yes. Tell him the programme and the number of plots and he will say plainly what he can hold.
Do you supply the materials?
On plot work the materials are normally yours, landed on site. On a domestic job he will usually sort them.
Do you work to NHBC detail?
Yes — ties, trays, DPC levels and movement joints to whatever the warranty provider's detail says, because that is what gets signed off.
