What he works to
On a commercial job the question is not whether the wall looks right, it is whether it passes. Below is what gets checked, and what the work is built to meet without anything being taken down.
| Bonding | To the drawing — stretcher, Flemish or English, with cut bats kept out of the face wherever the bond allows. |
|---|---|
| Wall ties | To the detail, typically 2.5 per m² and 900 × 450 mm staggered, closer at reveals and movement joints. |
| Mortar | Designation to the spec — M4 or M6 on most domestic work, gauged by the box and not by the shovel. |
| Damp course | 150 mm minimum above finished ground, lapped 100 mm at joints, and never bridged. |
| Movement joints | At the spacing the detail gives, typically every 12 m in clay brickwork, and left clean. |
| Tolerance | Plumb, level and line to BS EN 1996-2 — 10 mm in any storey height, 20 mm over the building. |
| Protection | Walls covered overnight and in frost. Brickwork laid wet or frozen is brickwork laid twice. |
| Clean down | Brushed as it goes and washed on completion. Acid only where the brick manufacturer allows it. |
Asked often
Commercial, answered
If yours is not here, ring and ask it.
What size jobs do you take?
Site brickwork for contractors and developers, priced by the metre. Tell him the drawings, the programme and the quantity and he will say plainly what he can hold.
Do you carry insurance?
Ask him directly — he will tell you what he holds and send the certificate. It is not something to take off a website.
Can you work to our QA?
Yes. Ties, trays, DPC and movement joints to the detail, protected overnight and in frost, and left clean for inspection.
How do you price variations?
Agreed before they are built, not after. A variation that turns up on an invoice is an argument neither of us wants.
